Francesco Magistrali will follow a never before trekked route across the South American wilderness to raise awareness for local culture, food, nature and human beings themselves.

Italian born Francesco Magistrali will embark on a never before traveled route across the South American wilderness next January, alone. With a little help from the public, Magistrali hopes to raise the funds to pay for a film crew to join him on the more exciting parts of the journey to document his adventure. Magistrali wants to use the documentary as a tool to educate and raise awareness about some of the major problems that are plaguing the planet, but he’s keen for people to know that “the Esmerelda Expedition is a very real research project.” In order to achieve this goal, the project is asking for $40,550 by December 16, 2013.

Magistrali will travel from the southerly tip of South America from Ushuaia, up through Argentina, across the desert in Chile. He will continue his journey across the salt plains of Bolivia and along the rivers which lead to the Amazon, the final destination of the research project. Aside from the times when the film crew joins him, Magistrali will travel completely alone using only traditional or man-powered transport (walking, cycling, canoeing etc.). He will immerse himself into the local cultures and use only sustainable resources to survive along the expedition. By using state of the art equipment, Magistrali will be able to keep followers updated with posts, pictures and video updates throughout the journey.

The Esmeralda Expedition has several partners who it will share its findings from the expedition with:

  • Catholic University of Milan, Department of Agriculture Expolab, a research group within the department will use the information Magistrali gathers from local cultures and tribes he sees along the expedition to educate people at the Expo 15, which will be held in Milan in 2015.

  • Fundaçao Almerinda Malaquias – The project has been helping local inhabitants around the Rio Negro area of the Amazon use crafts to help sustain their culture. Over 200 craftsmen have been trained and educated through the project.

  • Sataré Mawé – Brazilian and Italian experts have come together to build and introduce environmental and cultural solutions to help protect the tribe whose ancestors discovered the use for the famous Guaraná plant.

Supporters of the Documentary/research project will receive a gift from the Esmeralda Expedition team depending on how much money they are able to pledge. Perks include everything from photos taken during the expedition, to the contributors name in the documentary credits and even a satellite phone call from the man himself while on the expedition. As all funds needed for Magistrali to go on the journey have been raised, donations will go towards paying the film crew expenses such as flights, equipment etc., so that the journey can be documented.
