Support Public Art through Gravity-a Monumental Task
Sculptor Dean Kugler has opened a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for his art project. The large sculpture will be entered in the 2014 ArtPrize.
DAVENPORT, Iowa–Artist Dean Kugler has a passion for public art. He plans to create a 17-foot tall sculpture in the public arena and then enter the sculpture into the 2014 ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI. In an effort to complete the project, a Kickstarter campaign has been launched: Gravity-a monumental task. The crowdfunding campaign has a goal of $7,200 and it will close in less than a month. The end date is July 4 and the project will only be funded if the goal is met.
ArtPrize is an international art competition that lasts for 19 days in downtown Grand Rapids. This year, it will take place throughout September and October. In 2013, Kugler entered his sculpture, Grace, in the competition. The artist has had a growing interest in large scale sculpture work and two years ago, he created his first large 3-D project, a 7-foot tall sculpture entitled, Powerless, which was entered into a show and displayed on the Mississippi River in Dubuque, IA. Art enthusiasts can view his work at www.deankugler.com.
As a lover of public art and large scale work, Kugler plans to bring forth both through the Kickstarter campaign. He invites others to support art. Gravity will be a very large sculpture. At a height of 17 feet, it will be three times the height of an average person. Through his work, he is attempting to create new ways of sculpting that make large scale sculptures more affordable to build. While he designs and builds the sculpture, he plans to blog the process so people can follow his work. Kugler has a passion for the classical figurative genre, which is apparent in his artwork. He strives to displayrealistic figures in a world of abstraction.
For the past 15 years, the artist put his art passion aside in order to raise his two kids with his wife. There is a hope that this campaign will provide the transition to become a full-time artist. Gravity will be built with foam, wire, fiberglass cement, resin, and a lot of steel.Work will be done in a tent in case of inclement weather. Kickstarter funding will pay for sculpture materials, materials for the tent and site set-up, and the artist's labor. As a husband and father, the artist works a full time job to provide for his family. While creating the sculpture, he will have to take off work for two weeks plus additional time to bring the creation to the art festival and back home again.
Contributors can help artist Kugler achieve his passion and share art with others. Artwork will be given to those who back the project- some originals and some signed prints. The artist is offering completed life drawings to hissupporters. To see examples, visit the Kickstarter page. Ten Backers can receive an original signed drawing of the sculpture by pledging $250 for the campaign. Five top supporters, with a pledge of 2,000, get the privilege of owning a bronze cast of the sculpture study, and one lucky supporter can own the original sculpture study by pledging $3,500.
