Bootcamp Pilates instructor Nadine McCann, talks us through the basics of Reformer Pilates and what everyone should know before they try a class.

Nadine McCann has a background in competitive gymnastics and ballet, and was first introduced to Pilates at 15 as a means to recover from injury. As a qualified British Gymnastics coach and judge, she pursued her growing love of Pilates and went on to gain a Level 4 mat work qualification with Body Control Pilates. Here she shares eight things you need to know about Reformer Pilates:

Expect to work hard during a class.

“Pilates works muscles in the body that, trust me, you never thought you had! Muscles are worked in such a way that you will improve your shape, tone and posture. Although Reformer Pilates use the machine known as the Reformer, you don’t just lie on it and breathe. It’s much more than that!”

Reformer Pilates isn’t just for girls.

“In fact Pilates was first developed for men!! At Bootcamp Pilates our classes are for both male and female. Many of our male customers use our classes to help with their flexibility and to compliment training for specific sports.”

It’s all about commitment.

“Taking part in Reformer Pilates classes WILL help you achieve new body but as with anything you need to make a commitment to attending classes along with a healthy diet. We recommend a minimum of three classes a week to see results in 4-6 months. Joseph Pilates was quoted as saying that in 30 session you will be on your way to a whole new body”

Don’t forget to breathe.

“Joseph Pilates, the father of Pilates, said that you need to be in control of your entire body when exercising – not only your limbs but your mind and your breath. Breathing plays a very important role in all Pilates classes and each exercise starts with a breath. This concentration on breathing helps to centre the mind and work the body throughout the whole movement.”

Perfect for cardio-shy people.

“If you have always hated running or the sweaty cardio classes at the gym then Pilates is perfect for you. We can’t guarantee that you won’t sweat in our classes but the reformer works your body in a way that is kind to your joints and helps lengthen and strengthen your muscles without adding bulk as well as improving your overall fitness levels.”

Be hydrated.

“As with any exercise, we encourage our clients to drink water before, during and after a workout to help rid the body of toxins and stay hydrate throughout the workout.”

Say goodbye to bad health.

“Pilates, both Mat and Reformer, can help with pain in your body and many of our clients have used our classes as injury rehabilitation. It also does such great things for posture and body shape that there is no need for diets or cosmetic surgery!”

Wait for your friends to notice the difference.

“It’s great to see our clients notice the difference in their bodies and even better when they say that someone else commented on their new body! Working hard on the Reformer gets results and we have a saying…”Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful, hate my Pilates Instructor!”
