Record number of aircraft movements in Swedish airspace in 2018

2018 became a new record year in Swedish airspace with 785,000 movements. This is an increase in traffic of three per cent compared to 2017. Air traffic crossing Swedish airspace without starting or landing in Sweden accounts for the large increase.

– The airlines plan their flights so that they consume as little fuel as possible. LFV offers the airlines straight and efficient routes through Sweden. This, together with a general increase in air traffic, may explain why over-flying traffic across Sweden is increasing, says Ann Persson Grivas, Director General, LFV.

During the period May - October, air traffic reaches its maximum with 70 000 movements per month. January and July were the months that had the largest increase by about 5 per cent.
The difference between the three traffic categories domestic, international and over-flying is significant. Domestic flights decreased by just fewer than 9 per cent, international flights marginally increased by (1 per cent), while overflights increased by 10 per cent.
– For us as a provider of air navigation service, we have to lead traffic as sustainably as possible in daily work as well as develop new solutions for a sustainable flight, says Ann Persson Grivas.

With a three per cent increase in traffic, Sweden is slightly below the corresponding volume at European level, which is judged to end up just below four per cent. The forecast for 2019 indicates continued growth, though at a slightly lower rate.
