Textile service company Lindström has launched a workwear design competition among students in the field. Leading universities in Europe and Asia that teach clothing design have been invited to join the competition. The students will design a workwear collection for the restaurant business.

Textile service company Lindström, a Finnish family business, has invited students of clothing design from Europe and Asia to take part in a design competition. For the students, the competition is an opportunity to become familiar with the challenges of an international textile service company in the area of workwear design.

“Professional, customer-oriented design work is a prerequisite for good textile service. Companies have discovered the benefits of outsourced textile service, and designers will be in great demand in the sector of corporate workwear design,” says Juha Laurio, Lindström’s President and CEO. “Indeed, it is out objective to highlight the significance of workwear design from the perspective of both companies and designers.”

Students at universities that teach clothing design in Lindström’s area of operation, Europe and Asia, were invited to take part in the competition. The goal of the competition is to give students of the industry an opportunity to showcase their competence and bring fresh ideas to corporate workwear. With their design experience, the students will be able to network with other students in the field and create important contacts.

In workwear design, knowledge of different industries and cultures assume an important role alongside professional skills. A designer must understand the conditions and requirements of the position for which the clothes are designed. The task in the Lindström Award competition is to design a workwear collection for the restaurant business. “In the service branch, such as at restaurants and cafés, high requirements for appearance and usability are placed on workwear,” states Anna-Kaisa Huttunen, Lindström’s Design Manager. “Employees in the restaurant business move amongst people, so the clothes must not only look good but also fit well.” More and more frequently, companies try to set themselves apart from other with their workwear. That is why this competition is looking for a workwear collection that can be easily customised according to needs and the corporate image. “It will be interesting to see how the young designers face this challenge,” Anna-Kaisa says.

The competitors’ submissions will be assessed by an international jury, and the winner will be announced in May 2012.

Lindström has several decades of experience in corporate textile services. As many as one million people in Europe and Asia use Lindström’s workwear every day. In the past few years, Lindström has invested strongly in design work, as well, and these days the company has one of the largest in-house design departments in the industry. “Companies invest more and more in good design as far as workwear is concerned. At best, workwear supports the corporate image, makes the employees’ daily life easier and shows the employees that they and their well-being are appreciated,” states Anna-Kaisa Huttunen, Lindström’s Design Manager.
