DAILY DEALS SITES £300M BOOST FOR HIGH STREET

ALMOST £300million has been spent by UK consumers on daily deal websites in just six months – helping to boost falling high street sales following reports by the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The research, by DD Summit Europe, Europe’s first daily deal event, found that UK consumers enjoy an average saving of 56% on products and services purchased through sites such as LivingSocial. This will be welcome news for high street retailers after the BRC released figures that show like-for-like sales were down on last year.

LivingSocial -- one of the industry’s leading social commerce websites -- predicts an even brighter future for the industry, as Managing Director Peter Briffett celebrated the organisation’s link-up with supermarket grocer Tesco this week.

He said: “LivingSocial now has more than 60 million members worldwide who are enjoying discovering local experiences and services at affordable prices.

“Social commerce is turning the marketing model upside down, by allowing local and national businesses to target specific audiences and drive online consumers into offline retailers.

With over 70 active daily deal sites in the UK -- and more than 200 new sites launching in the past six months across Europe -- online daily deal sites have quickly influenced UK consumer shopping habits.

Stavros Prodomou, director of DD Summit Europe added: “Consumers are already spending a huge amount of money on daily deals and this is set to increase in 2012.”

In the increasingly difficult economic climate, consumers are tightening their spending and changing their shopping habits.  Social commerce is

Emma Britneff, 24, London claimed: “I always get a kick out of buying things on the cheap and I’ve saved at least £400 so far (in ten months), which feels amazing.”

At LivingSocial, experiences and products range from skydiving and spa treatments, to discount off leading high street brands and one-off unique opportunities.  Membership is free, visit www.livingsocial.co.uk for more information.
