Peer mentoring program, The Boomerang Project, announces ten graduating Link Leaders awarded academic scholarships in 2012

SANTA CRUZ, CAJune 12, 2012 – The Boomerang Project, a company that trains educators to facilitate peer mentoring in schools using leadership and group development methodologies, is excited to announce that the 2012 Link Crew Scholarship Winners have been selected.

The Boomerang Project has awarded ten scholarships to outstanding senior Link Leaders. The Link Crew Scholarship Program is open annually to all graduating senior Link Leaders who have completed at least one year of service as a Link Leader. These awe-inspiring scholars, located throughout the United States and Canada, have successfully led a peer mentoring program in their hometown high schools to create a positive environment for all students. This year’s student leader scholarship winners are: Rosario Gutierrez, Christopher HS, CA; Carly O’Neal, Livonia Central HS, NY; Sunny Shergill, Clayton Valley HS, CA; Jazmine Downing,
South Oldham HS, KY; Luis Salazar, Santa Paula HS, CA; Harshdeep Hehar, Turner Fenton SS, Ontario; Tyler Robinson, Lee M. Thurston HS, MI; Stacy Amy Tam, John A. Rowland HS, CA; Mathew Peterson, Duluth Denfeld HS, MN; and Megan Whitman, Glacier Peak High School, WA.

“Link Crew hasn’t only changed me, but it changed our entire school climate, and it has helped a lot of people. I believe that everyone should have an opportunity to take on a leadership position, and to do something meaningful, and Link Crew takes care of both,” said Sunny Shergill, a 2012 Link Crew Scholarship Winner.

Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, Link Crew creates a system of support using upperclassmen in a student mentoring capacity. With Link Crew, upperclassmen are trained to be Link Crew Leaders and, as positive role models, these Leaders act as mentors and student leaders. They lead High School Orientations, Academic Follow Ups, Social Follow Ups, and Leader Initiated Contacts throughout the year to ensure that freshmen are guided, supported and set up for success from the moment they enter their new school.

Link Crew's goal is to provide schools with a structure in which students make real connections with each other, thus increasing school safety and reducing the incidence of bullying through anti-bullying education. The transition program has positively impacted millions of incoming freshman throughout the United States and Canada for over 20 years—leading to increased attendance, decreased discipline referrals and improved academic performance.
