Finland’s politicians should aim beyond borders for maximum climate change impact

Tens of thousands of voters protesting are signaling to politicians that they want to see serious action when it comes to climate change. But are many politicians missing the Finnish climate technology opportunity that is right in front of them?

Lassi Noponen, CEO of Loudspring comments:

“This has become the Climate Election and if Finnish politicians really want to address climate change they need to look beyond our own borders and influence the energy systems and cities around the world.”

“Finland has the world's best technology for significant energy savings in industry, real estate and mobility. We have significant new resource-saving circular technologies. We have developed new materials that will replace plastics. We also have cutting-edge technology for sustainable food production and managing the entire food value chain. There is also groundbreaking water technology in our country, which also contributes strongly to reducing energy use.”

Lassi Noponen further adds:

“These Finnish technologies can play a very important role in mitigating climate change but in Finland, the conversation has too much focused on biofuels, while car manufacturers have made their choice and the future is electric. Forests are a treasure trove that deserve to be saved for an infinite number of other possibilities other than energy use.”

With a population of only 5.5 million people, the real impact of CO2 emissions from Finnish people is quite small, even though the per capita emissions are high when compared to other European countries (the average Finn produces 13 500 kg of CO2 each year). With climate change being a global challenge and Finnish technology of such high quality, Noponen urges leaders to think bigger.

“Finland is a world-leader when it comes to being educated and technologically savvy. Everyone should do their part in their individual lives, and making changes in one’s own lifestyle can be empowering. However, Finland’s biggest impact comes from looking outwards and effectively deploying our technology solutions to markets abroad for maximum impact.”
