Auckland Business School Entrepreneurs' Challenge winner, Manuka Health, commits award to clinical trials

New Zealand-based natural health products company, Manuka Health, have received a significant boost to their clinical trials funding by being awarded a share of $1 million as one of three winners in this year’s University of Auckland Business School - Entrepreneurs’ Challenge.

Manuka Health’s CEO Kerry Paul says they are delighted to have been selected after a rigorous due diligence process and against strong competition.

“The funds will go towards clinical trials to back the health claims of our natural health products. It’s critically important to have scientific evidence behind our products as this results in increased consumer confidence and higher sales and registering health claims with regulatory authorities in specific markets is the company’s next major focus.”

Manuka Health has seen huge growth since it first started trading just 6 years ago. Today, the company manufactures natural health products sold to over 45 countries and has already established itself as one of the leaders in the Manuka Honey market worldwide.

This rapid growth has been supported by a number of key features of the company:

Guarantee of supply

Manuka Health has developed a bee-keeping base of over 40 suppliers who supply 100% of their honey to them – that’s over 60,000 bee-hives!  At the same time they have developed their own bee-keeping operation enabling them to have total control over honey production and secure both the quantity and quality of Manuka Honey. This guarantees supply whilst other company’s rely more heavily on the commodity market with resultant price and supply instability.

Methylglyoxal content

Manuka Health is the only company worldwide to market Manuka Honey which has been tested and certified to contain at least 100 mg/kg of nutritional methylglyoxal – the compound which gives Manuka Honey its unique activity.

Investment in research

With continued investment in research, clinical trials and product development, boosted by this award, the speed of growth in sales will continue to gather pace for the retailer, individual countries and worldwide.

Paul concludes “Winning this challenge is an exciting stimulus for the next stage of the company’s development which, we believe, will make it the global leader in natural healthcare.”

About Manuka Health Manuka Honey

Supported by the rigours of scientific research, Manuka Health natural health products can enhance your health and well-being.  As well as being great tasting all our honey is measured using a simple and clear measuring system called MGO which stands for Methylglyoxal

MGO represents the number of milligrams of the active compound, Methylglyoxal, per kg of Manuka Honey.  So MGO 100 means there is at least 100mg of the active compound in a kg of Manuka Honey.

A number of other measurement systems are in use but none indicate clearly the amount of active compound in the pot.

Manuka Health Manuka Honey comes in five potencies:

MGO 30+

MGO 100+

MGO 250+  (2.5 x more methylglyoxal than MGO 100 )

MGO 400+  (4 x more methylglyoxal than MGO 100 )

MGO 550+  (5.5 x more methylglyoxal than MGO 100 )

All of our MGO Manuka Honey products are scientifically tested and verified to ensure consistent quality.  Every batch is subjected to laboratory tests that measure various quality parameters including Dietary Methylglyoxal content.

Also in the range are Manuka Honey toothpastes, adults and kids throat syrups, honey suckles and lollipops.
