MOOG provides workshops with comprehensive guide to wheel alignment and tyre wear
Federal-Mogul Motorparts has released an information bulletin detailing how to check for tyre wear patterns relating to wheel and suspension misalignment
Bradford, UK, 22nd September… Federal-Mogul Motorparts, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML), has released its latest MOOG® Easy Solutions Bulletin (ESB) on wheel alignment. It provides an illustrated guide to the common symptoms and causes of abnormal tyre wear and suggests corrective action.
MOOG suggests that severe driving incidents and the replacement of steering and suspension components justifies a wheel alignment, even if the parts are not adjustable. If a wheel alignment is not conducted after such incidences, this may result in the vehicle’s suspension specifications drifting outside the manufacturers’ recommended limit. Poor wheel alignment can lead to the vehicle pulling or premature wear of the tyres and suspension parts.
“Abnormal tyre wear is an easy-to-spot symptom of either incorrect wheel alignment or tyre pressures, garages can help customers save money in the long run by making this simple check on every vehicle that enters the workshop,” said Jonathan Allen, Regional Marketing Manager of Federal-Mogul Motorparts. “The guide helps technicians to quickly and simply identify any wheel alignment issues by recognising any abnormal tyre wear, allowing them to inform the customer appropriately. An example of irregular tyre wear is where either the outer or inner shoulder is heavily worn. In the guide, MOOG suggests this is because of excessive camber, in which case the camber should be checked and adjusted to the vehicle specifications. In order to avoid reoccurrence of this issue, it is also advised the shock absorbers, ball joints and control arm bushings are also checked to make sure they are not worn out.
