Proven K-block brake solution from Jurid® provides improved performance and durability

Glinde, Germany, 20th July 2016… Federal-Mogul Motorparts, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation, has launched its new Jurid® K-block friction material for rail freight wagons. Jurid 822, which is a comprehensive evolution of the market-proven Jurid 816M product, provides the K-block solution for state-of-the-art, single-sided 1xBgu brake wagons. Optimised contact surface areas and use of the latest manufacturing techniques also help to reduce wheel and block wear rates by up to 15 percent, compared to competitor solutions. The new K-block is currently undergoing a full range of tests on the new InnoWaggon, operated by Rail Cargo Group, a member of Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

“Federal-Mogul’s detailed market knowledge and close working relationship with freight wagon manufacturers, freight wagon keepers and fleet operators provide us with a clear vision of solutions required by the rail industry,” said Martin Hendricks, President Global Braking and Regional President EMEA, Federal-Mogul Motorparts. “Our partnerships with brake system manufacturers and their suppliers give us a crucial understanding of the complete package. We provide a solution from initial concept and development through to commercialisation, meaning that all friction requirements can be met from a single source.”

Jurid 822 is compatible with the latest EU legislation (UIC,TSI WAG, TSI NOISE) that tightened controls over noise and performance. The existing Jurid K-block technology was restricted to double-sided brake applications. In contrast, with Jurid 822, Federal-Mogul Motorparts offers a solution that enables the use of single-sided 1xBgu brake wagons throughout Europe. It is estimated that 6,000 to 8,000 new wagons with single-sided brake systems will be placed into operation in Europe annually in the next couple of years. Jurid 822 provides freight operators with an opportunity to improve the efficiency and operation costs of these vehicles.

Initial tests by Federal-Mogul Motorparts have shown that Jurid 822 has a longer life cycle than competitors’ materials but also reduces the wear on the wheel by up to 15 percent without compromising performance. As the wheel is one of the most expensive consumable components in the maintenance of freight wagons, reducing its wear has a significant effect on the total Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of the vehicle.

“Following extensive in-house R&D, the Jurid team has optimised the shape of the block-to-wheel contact area to improve performance, reduce NVH levels and offer improved lifespan,” said Gernot Kasper, Director Global Rail & Industry, Federal-Mogul Motorparts. “During extensive trials in a controlled dynamometer environment, Jurid 822 also provided significantly improved performance results when compared with leading competitors. Compared to Jurid 816M, the overall weight of the 822 block has also been reduced without negatively impacting durability, optimising the marginal gains in every technical area. It provides a truly market leading product and a vital solution for the freight industry.”

Jurid 822 has been undergoing testing since 2015, including in-service fleet trials, according to UIC 541-4 standards, on the new Rail Cargo Group’s InnoWaggon. This includes a demanding route across the Alps with high loads, between Pernhofen-Wulzeshofen and Liezen, commonly known as the Semmering pass (around 1,000 metres above sea level). The friction blocks and wheels were continuously measured for wear and data collected on wheel geometry to determine overall friction material performance. Jurid 822 is expected to be fully approved and commercialised by 2017.

Federal-Mogul Motorparts will present its portfolio of rail braking applications at InnoTrans in Berlin from September 20thto 23rd2016 in hall 1.2, stand 215.
