Metsä Wood Press Release 8 May 2013

Metsä Wood will provide wooden structures for transport and logistics company DB Schenker's new terminal to be built in the Viinikkala area of Vantaa, Finland. The contract covers the delivery and installation of the frame, roof, and exterior walls of an approximately 12,000 square metres extension to a terminal, with construction beginning in May 2013. All together, the terminal space will cover 31,800 square metres.

“We chose Metsä Wood because the cost-effectiveness, schedule, and environmental values of the delivery met our needs,” explains Marco Furu, real-estate director at DB Schenker. “The environmental goals of our parent company, Deutsche Bahn Group, form the guidelines for our actions.  Sustainably built and maintained real estate is one aspect of reaching these goals. Metsä Wood's wooden structures’ extremely small carbon footprint in comparison with other materials on the market was an important criterion for us.”

Rapid construction, lightness, and durability are some of the fundamental qualities of Metsä Wood's solutions. “Metsä Wood's prefabricated frame and Kerto-Ripa roof elements enable the quick assembly of even a large industrial building, allowing the work on the interior to get off to an efficient start. This shortens the overall time spent on the construction work,” explains Ari Tiukkanen, Senior Vice President, Building and Industry of Metsä Wood.

DB Schenker's terminal will be built in accordance with the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) certification system, which focuses on issues of management, water and energy consumption, building materials, land use, and traffic. In 2012, DB Schenker's turnover was approximately 20.3 billion euros. DB Schenker is part of the Deutsche Bahn Group, which operates in 130 countries, employing 293,000 people.
