An innovative and pioneering end of life recycling scheme has received national acclaim at the RAC Cooling Industry Awards 2013, which recognised the partnership between air conditioning manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric and Overton Recycling.

Securing the Environmental Collaboration of the Year Award, the two companies were praised by the judges for addressing the difficult task of responsibly handling and recycling end of life equipment.

Mitsubishi Electric and Overton have combined their resources to ensure that the disposal at the end of old equipment’s life is more closely controlled, as well as maximising the amount of material that can be reclaimed.

The process sees Overton’s collect any brand of air conditioning from Mitsubishi Electric’s customers free of charge, and reclaim an average of 99.1 per cent of all materials from the old units, as well as ensure the proper disposal of de-gassed refrigerants.

“When we first started talking to Overton, we wanted a robust scheme that could provide a full audit trail,” explained Martin Fahey, Sustainable Solutions Manager for Mitsubishi Electric, who collected the award along with Dean Overton.

“We are now delighted that other manufacturers are following our lead and signing up with Overton as we realise that we all need to tackle end of life together,” he added.

Fahey and Overton collected their award from sponsor Cold Service at the prestigious ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton, in front of a crowd of 700 industry representatives.

The assembled throng was entertained with a riotous stand-up routine from comedian, Simon Evans who also hosted the awards.

“As a responsible manufacturer, we are aware of our role in not only ensuring our products provide energy efficiency for customers throughout their working life, but that they are also disposed of in the most efficient way possible,” added Fahey.

“The recognition of our peers in this way confirms our belief in developing a robust and quality system from manufacturing plant right through to disposal.”
