Mitsubishi Electric shows what renewables can achieve today

Mitsubishi Electric is using its presence at Ecobuild (ExCel, London, 5–7March) to highlight real world building projects that are using existing renewable technologies to improve energy performance and lower both carbon emissions and in many cases, energy bills.

“Ecobuild is undoubtedly the cutting edge of the renewables industry and we are likely to see several ground breaking products, not least on our own stand,” explains Martin Fahey, sustainable solutions manager for the manufacturer of heating, cooling and ventilation equipment.  “However, there are also advanced off-the-shelf products that are proven to work, will help meet legislation and building requirements and are ideal for retro-fitting as well as new-build.”

The company’s stand (N3110) details the improvements made in both new build and retro-fit projects in domestic and commercial settings, through energy saving equipment and renewable technology such as the award-winning Ecodan® air source heat pump.

These include domestic and commercial heat pump heating systems, heat recovery ventilation units, and air conditioning that is designed to keep the heating and cooling requirements to the minimum needed for internal comfort, whilst helping to cost-effectively replace out of date systems that use the soon-to-be-banned R22 refrigerant.

“There is technology available straightaway that can transform the energy performance of the vast majority of our buildings and as an industry we have the expertise to design, commission, install and support it,” explains Fahey.

The company has examples of commercial air source heat pumps being used as community heating systems and providing all the heating for several schools and an agricultural showroom. 

Thousands of domestic Ecodan models have now been installed across the country from the Shetland Islands to the Isle of Wight, from single houses to high-rise towers. 

The system is also ideal for older homes that have been thermally insulated and Ecodan is providing heating in properties including solid brick Victorian buildings.  It can also help modern houses meet Levels 3 and 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

“In addition to heating products, we will be highlighting our range of ErP (Energy related products) air conditioning models which meet the highest EU standards of eco design to offer commercial properties energy efficient heating and cooling,” adds Fahey. 

Mitsubishi Electric remains the only air conditioning manufacturer to reject the idea of residential air conditioning in the UK as unnecessary and unsustainable. In today’s commercial environment though, which contains increasing levels of heat-generating equipment, heat loads can be an issue, particularly in summer. 

The company has pioneered the use of heat recovery systems to transfer heating and cooling around a building and these days systems are able to provide hot water as a direct result of this heat transfer.  Systems can also link air conditioning with heat recovery ventilation systems and air curtains to ensure any commercial building is operating as efficiently as possible.

“We will also demonstrate a comprehensive range of control systems which are key to getting energy efficiency out of any building,” ends Fahey.
