MdBio Foundation Funds Scholarships for Montgomery College Students Preparing for Science Careers
The MDBio Foundation has awarded Montgomery College a $10,000 grant to support students pursuing careers in the sciences. The funds will provide scholarships for up to 10 students during the 2015–16 academic year who are studying biotechnology, life science, chemistry, or biochemistry.
The scholarship continues a strong partnership between the two institutions. Since 2007, the MDBio Foundation has supported the education of 56 students through scholarships.
“Building students’ interest in STEM education and careers is an important component of the MdBio Foundation’s mission,” explained CEO and President Brian Gaines. “We are pleased to offer this scholarship at Montgomery College, which complements a series of MdBio Foundation programs that engage students from middle school to college and are aimed at developing a diverse and talented science and technology workforce
This scholarship coincides with the MdBio Foundation’s recent series of one-day college and career symposia known as Advancing Tomorrow’s Leaders + STEM (ATLAS). The programs are designed to encourage high school juniors, seniors and college undergraduates to learn more about careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
“Our students benefit greatly when local organizations step forward and support their educational dreams,” said Dr. James Sniezek, instructional dean for the chemical and biological sciences at Montgomery College. “Thank you to the MdBio Foundation both for its generosity this year and for a fruitful partnership spanning more than eight years.”
Students selected to receive the MdBio Foundation Scholarship must be enrolled in the College’s biotechnology, life science, chemistry, or biochemistry programs; maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5; demonstrate financial need; and be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. In addition, the scholarship has a preference for students who have participated in any of the MdBio Foundation’s ATLAS symposia or are currently enrolled in the Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) program.
Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) is a collaborative effort between Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Schools, and The Universities at Shady Grove that creates a seamless educational pathway and support structure from high school to completion of a bachelor’s degree for students from groups typically under-represented in college and those from the first generation in their families to attend.
Interested students may apply for this scholarship—and hundreds of additional scholarship opportunities through the Montgomery College Foundation—by completing the online application at montgomerycollege.academicworks.com. The fall deadline is August 31.
