Montgomery College to Host President of Association of American Colleges and Universities, Feb. 5
Montgomery College will welcome Dr. Carol Geary Schneider, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), on February 5, 2014 at the College’s Germantown Campus, 20200 Observation Drive. The discussion will be held in Room 216 of the High Technology and Science Center from 2 to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by The Global Humanities Institute (GHI) at Montgomery College, this informative and timely presentation on the value of the humanities and liberal arts in a global context will focus on the student experience and their pathways to the humanities.
GHI was established at the College in 2012 through a Bridging Cultures grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program includes new globalized humanities coursework, faculty professional development, and campus events, all of which promote a global approach to humanities instruction and reinforce the role of the humanities in education and civic entities.
With nearly 1,300 member institutions, half public and half private from two-year and four-year institutions, AAC&U is the leading national organization devoted to advancing and strengthening undergraduate liberal education.
Under Dr. Geary Schneider’s leadership, AAC&U launched “Liberal Education and America's Promise” (LEAP), a public advocacy and campus action initiative designed to engage students and the public with what really matters in a college education for the twenty-first century. The LEAP campaign builds on AAC&U's major effort, “Greater Expectations: The Commitment to Quality as a Nation Goes to College,” a multi-year initiative designed to articulate the aims of a twenty-first century liberal education and to identify comprehensive, innovative models that improve learning for all undergraduate students.
Dr. Schneider has published extensively on all the major areas of her educational work and has taught at the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Chicago State University and Boston University.Dr. Schneider is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor’s degree in history and a PhD in history from Harvard University. She was the 2011 recipient of the ACPA's Contribution to Higher Education Award and the 2013 recipient of the NAC&U Ernest L. Boyer Award, and she was honored in 2013 as one of Diverse Magazine's "25 Leading Women in Higher Education."
