Motatos’ Impact Report 2022: The E-Commerce Contributed to a Net Positive Impact of Over 15 000 Tonnes of CO2e

Today, the e-commerce and impact company, Motatos, has launched its 2022 Impact Report. The report (available here) shows that the business focusing on recirculation of food and consumer products contributed to an overall net positive impact of over 15 000 tCO2e. This is an increase of almost 1000 tCO2e from the previous year.

- Our company mission is about helping create a more sustainable future for food and with this report, we want to shed some light on our contributions. Compared to last year's report, the 2022 version presents a better, more refined and fuller scope. The Scope 3 assessment is more comprehensive with additional metrics, and we have also added new People metrics and Policy topics, says Hanna Thofelt Lindström, Head of Communications and Impact at Motatos.

The recently released Impact Report shows that Motatos negative emissions amounted to a total of 4 521 tCO2e in 2022, an increase of almost 300% compared to the year before. At the same time, over 25 000 tonnes of food and consumer products were recirculated across all five markets and this in turn resulted in positive net savings of 19 766 tCO2e. Consequently, the net positive impact amounted to 15 245 tCO2e, which is a significant increase of 934 tCO2e compared to 2021.

The rise of emissions can be attributed to two primary factors. Firstly, the company has made substantial investments in its new Nordic warehouse, which includes the installation of solar panels and a robot system. These investments account for over 60% of the total emissions. Secondly, the Scope 3 assessment has been expanded to include a broader range of emissions, resulting in the measurement of additional emissions that were previously unaccounted for.

- All factors combined, we give ourselves an overall decent planet grade for 2022. The increase in emissions is to a large extent linked to our new Nordic warehouse - which is a strategic investment that in one go has tripled our food saving capabilities. The solar panels generate renewable energy and their environmental break-even point will be attained within 10 years. The robot system is also a very important investment for our financial profitability. And let’s face it, if we’re not financially sustainable we will not be able to continue our business in the longer run, concludes Hanna Thofelt Lindström.

The People section in the 2022 report features two new people-centric metrics: the Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) and the Employee Commitment Index. These new measures showed good results, with an eNPS of 33 and an Employee Commitment Index of 78%.

- We are happy to see that the new key figures show positive numbers, but we only see it as a good start. We will continue to work actively together with our employees to constantly develop and improve, says Anna Holmqvist, Chief People Officer at Motatos.

Motatos' impact focus going forward will be on continuing to improve the accuracy of the planet impact calculations and intensifying work around diversity and inclusion and a healthy workplace.

About Motatos
Motatos was set up in Sweden in 2014 by founders Ulf Skagerström, Erik Södergren, and Karl Andersson, in response to the global issue of food wastage. Approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Motatos allows consumers to purchase food, grocery, and general household items which would otherwise be thrown away by FMCG producers. Factors such as overproduction, incorrect packaging, seasonal trends, and short expiry dates all contribute to a surplus of items which cannot be sold in time. Motatos saves these products, selling them at low-cost to consumers online, and delivering directly to customers’ doorsteps. The Motatos product range is wide and varied, ranging from popular pantry items such as breads and jams, to beauty and health products, pet foods, and games and toys. Since founding, Motatos has saved over 60,000 tonnes of food and consumer products from being wasted.
