Mott MacDonald launches Carbon Trail Calculator

Report this content

Mott MacDonald has developed a new tool to measure carbon emissions arising from the project related activities of its staff. The Carbon Trail Calculator allows users to log staff activities and uses carbon emissions factors to establish the footprint associated with each. The tool makes visible the full carbon impact of a project by showing clients the contribution of personnel, not just the embodied carbon of materials. It can also be used to identify opportunities for behavioural change.

Clare Wildfire, Mott MacDonald’s sustainability director, commented: “We developed this tool as part of our commitment to monitoring and reducing carbon emissions, enhancing our position as an innovative sustainability consultancy. As more companies publish their carbon footprint in line with regulations and corporate social responsibility targets, the calculator will allow staff and clients to identify the true carbon emissions associated with projects.”

The calculator takes account of office energy use, paper consumed for printing and travel to and from meetings. It makes it easy to measure carbon emissions avoided through use of online or video conferencing or through the use of public transport rather than car. Unlike traditional carbon footprints which calculate carbon emissions at the end of an activity, the carbon calculator allows emissions to be measured at any stage of a project.

The calculator allows Mott MacDonald to identify key carbon emission hotspots and where energy consumption is high measures can be put in place to promote energy conservation.
