NCC is affiliating itself with the UN-backed Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA) climate initiative and has set itself a target of a 50-percent reduction in its CO2 emissions by 2020. The reduction uses 2015 as the baseline year.

“As a major construction and property company, we have the opportunity to make a difference with regard to the impact on our climate. Our emissions take the form of greenhouse gases generated through the use of materials and the fact that a large portion of our energy use is still reliant on fossil fuels, which is something we are working hard to reduce. Initiatives in recent years have included the conversion of a number of asphalt plants, switching them from oil to wood pellets, and we are working continuously to build ever-more resource-efficient and energy-saving products,” says Christina Lindbäck, SVP Corporate Sustainability at NCC.

Focusing on clear goals to minimize the company’s own environmental impact has been high on NCC’s agenda for a number of years.

One of the goals has been to minimize the use of hazardous material by accrediting an ever-increasing number of projects and certifying them under the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. The goal for 2015 has been to certify a minimum of 400 housing units in production under the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. The outcome for 2014 was 447.

NCC also works to reduce energy consumption in its actual construction operations through the establishment of green workplaces, as well as in completed projects that are delivered to customers. For example, the energy use of housing units constructed by NCC has been 25-percent below the level stipulated in building codes for a number of years now.

“Now we are further stepping up the pace and setting our sights on reducing our CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2020. We will achieve this mainly by continuing to convert our asphalt plants to renewable fuels and by increasing the share of renewable forms of energy across a broad front in our own use of energy. We also plan to review our transport activities,” says Christina Lindbäck.

To ensure the success of the global transition to low-carbon and sustainable societies, all players must contribute and work in a proactive and targeted manner to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Ahead of the COP21 climate summit in Paris, the UN has initiated an Action Agenda to show how companies, cities, municipalities and organizations contribute to the climate efforts. Participants in the initiative can register their activities in the NAZCA (link) database, detailing how their actions help to reduce emissions.
