“Together with the new trains, the depot creates the conditions for the continued development of sustainable travel in and between counties. The new depot will contribute to enhanced know-how in relation to rail vehicles and maintenance and will also create new jobs. For passengers, train traffic will be more stable and Nässjö’s role as a rail travel center will also be strengthened,” says Carl-Johan Sjöberg, Director of Transport, Jönköpings Länstrafik.

The project comprises the construction of a new train depot in Nässjö for the service and maintenance of the new trains that will start to serve the routes in and around the county beginning in 2024. The depot will comprise approximately 7,500 square meters, with four maintenance tracks, maintenance station, washing and cleaning facilities, warehouse and office premises.

The project features a sustainability program, with a focus on renewable electricity, eco-friendly materials, sustainable surface water management and minimization of transport journeys. To reduce consumption, the water from the washing facility can be recycled. The office section will be constructed with a wooden framework and the roof of the depot building will be fitted with solar panels.

The assignment is a turnkey contract that will be carried out in partnering form between NCC and RJL Tågdepån Nässjö AB, a subsidiary to Region Jönköping County. The cooperation commenced in 2020 and since then, the parties have worked on the planning, budgeting and the project design of the construction work.

“This is a strategically important initiative that is timely and promotes and safeguards sustainable travel. By working in partnering form and with our extensive experience of earlier depots, such as Kärråkra in Hässleholm and Norsborg in Stockholm, we are looking forward to delivering a train depot for the train traffic of the future in and around Jönköping County,” says Henrik Landelius, Business Area Manager of NCC Building Sweden.

The preparatory groundwork has begun, and the depot will be completed in spring 2023.

The transaction amounts to approximately SEK 550 million, half of which will be registered among orders in the Building Sweden business area and half in the Infrastructure business area in the second quarter of 2021.
