NCC has entered into an agreement with the Capital Region of Denmark concerning the molding of the building structure for the new part of Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital), named the North Wing. The total order value is approximately SEK 410 million.

“Building the North Wing of Copenhagen University Hospital will be an interesting assignment, since it will be the first of a number of large-scale hospital construction projects that are planned for Zealand in the near future. This construction project will thus give us valuable experience that we will be able to utilize when these other hospitals have to be built or expanded,” says Klaus Kaae, Business Area Manager at NCC Construction Denmark.

The assignment is scheduled to commence in February 2015. The new building will be erected close to the existing Copenhagen University Hospital. The building will have eight stories to the west and three stories to the east facing Blegdamsvej. This will give the North Wing an exciting architectural expression that will link the new hospital structure with the existing buildings.

Advanced concreting works

Part of the concreting works will require specialist expertise, since it involves the building of concrete decks that will have to withstand the types of vibrations and movements that always arise in buildings in which people move about.

“From a purely professional viewpoint, the assignment is really exciting. It involves complex concreting works, which include fulfilling requirements that will enable the University Hospital to use its hospital equipment and instruments, which are sensitive to vibrations. In this context, our multiyear experience of concreting works will be put to good use,” says Department Head, Rune Holm Madsen, NCC Construction Denmark.

The new hospital wing is divided into seven departments, which will be at right angles to each other in a zigzag structure in order to reduce distances at the hospital. The property will house such departments as wards, operating theaters, support functions and administration. A culvert and a pedestrian walkway to the current hospital will also be built.

NCC’s main work is scheduled for completion in September 2016 and its work will be finalized in September 2017, when the pedestrian walkway between the North Wing and the existing building will be ready. When fully completed in January 2018, the North Wing will comprise 33 operating theaters and 212 single-bed rooms.

The order will be registered during the fourth quarter of 2014 in the NCC Construction Denmark business area.
