NCC presents the House without electricity bills

The house without electricity bills has now been developed. Today, NCC is presenting a globally unique concept house that is completely self sufficient in terms of electricity, heating and cooling.

Using existing technologies and a large amount of innovation, an NCC project team, headed by Kristina Gabrielii, has developed a conceptual building – NCC Concept House – that is driven exclusively by solar and wind power. “The reason for exhibiting this unique conceptual building is to show that there are no longer any impediments to building houses that are completely in unison with nature,” says Alf Göransson, President and Chief Executive Officer of NCC. NCC has used existing state-of-the-art technologies from other industries and can now present a building that is “unplugged.” Although building the house would not be commercially feasible today, increased investments in environmental technology would make the concept commercially attractive, generate growth and give Sweden a leading position in the area. Solar cells and wind-power plants provide the direct electrical power required for the building’s daily operation. Surplus energy is stored in batteries and hydrogen-gas tubes for use at night and during the winter months. The building is heated by the surplus heat generated from the production and use of hydrogen gas. Energy wells are used for cooling. “The greenhouse effect is already impacting on our environment. Houses and other buildings account for 40 percent of all energy consumption in Sweden. For this reason, NCC has a great responsibility when it comes to building the houses of the future and thus contributing to sustainable social development,” says Kristina Gabrielii, Project Manager at NCC Technology. The Concept House is a 900-square-meter conference facility that can accommodate groups of up to 50 people, including 15 overnight guests. The building is well insulated and has a good layout and intelligently selected installations. The use of solar energy and the rigidity of the building sections mean that the additional energy required for heating and cooling the building is minimal. The project was initiated by NCC and was implemented in cooperation with ABB Corporate Research and AIX Arkitekter AB.
