NCC Construction has been awarded the assignment to expand Highway 40 through Jönköping into a four-lane freeway. The client is the National Road Administration’s Southeastern Region and the contract is worth SEK 149 million.

The 1.5-kilometer section between the Ljungarum junction and Göteborgsbacken in Jönköping is to be expanded into a four-lane freeway, thus increasing accessibility and traffic safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Highway 40 through the Haga industrial site in Jönköping is passed by approximately 20,000 vehicles every day, including 3,000 vehicles used in heavy traffic, such as trucks. The section of highway is accident-prone and its redesign is both eagerly awaited and of a high priority. “NCC’s proposal provides the National Road Administration with the highway solution it desires, while saving a few million kronor for Swedish tax payers,” says Tomas Calmviken, Business Manager at NCC Construction Sweden, Eastern Region. The project comprises both the rebuild of Highway 40 into a freeway, with the relating junction, and a rebuild of the adjacent network of roads. New bridges will be built at locations where the freeway crosses railways, waterways, local roads and pedestrian and cycle paths. Construction will commence on August 24, 2005 and the new section of freeway is scheduled for completion during 2007. The order will be registered during the third quarter of 2005. July 7, 2005 is the deadline for appeals of the National Road Administration’s procurement decision.
