NCC receives order in Central America valued at about SEK 1,3 billion

NCC receives order in Central America valued at about SEK 1.3 billion NCC has received orders for two hydropower plants in Costa Rica, as well as a dam facility and water supply project in the Dominican Republic for a total value of SEK 1.3 billion. "These orders are highly satisfying," says Peter Nielsen, President of NCC Civil Engineering, which includes NCC's international operations. "NCC previously built a power plant in Costa Rica and we are currently established in Nicaragua, where we are responsible for part of the rebuilding work after Hurricane Mitch. These new projects give NCC a continued strong position in Central America, which is fully in line with our strategic direction." One of the hydropower plants in Costa Rica, Brasil II, is located on the Rio Virilla River, just outside San Jose. The power plant will be located about two kilometers downstream of the Brasil I plant that was constructed by NCC and completed in 1998. The project comprises a concrete dam, a transmission tunnel, concrete culverts, pressure pipes and a surface power plant. The plant will generate 31 MW. The second power plant, El Encanto, is located about 100 kilometers northwest of San Jose on the Aranjuez River. El Encanto comprise a concrete dam, a long transmission tunnel in concrete (culverts), pressure pipes and a surface power plant. The project generates 9 MW. Both hydropower plants will be constructed by a consortium, Consortio Noruego, which in addition to NCC includes General Electric Energy Norway and Alstom Norway. Statkraft Grøner is the designer. NCC's share of the order amount is about USD 50 million. In the Dominican Republic, a dam is to be built on the Camu River in La Vega Province in the center of the western part of the country. The main task of the dam is to serve as a barrier to prevent flooding in the rainy season. It will also be possible to use the dam to secure water supplies in the area, for both drinking water and farm irrigation. The project involves a 70-meter-high ballast-filled dam with an asphalt core, intake and overflow structures in concrete, a pressure tunnel and a flushing tunnel in bedrock, as well as a 3-4-MW surface power plant, including necessary buildings. NCC's share of the project amounts to approximately USD 35 million. A water supply project will be carried out in Brujuela-Casui to secure future availability of freshwater to the eastern section of Santo Domingo. The reason for the project is the need to control water supplies for the capital city and surrounding areas. The project mainly entails the drilling and construction of groundwater wells in three areas, piping deliveries and pipe laying in these areas, two concrete water tanks, pumping stations and other facilities. The project is valued at about USD 54 M and NCC is responsible for the entire project. These projects are being carried out in cooperation between NCC International and NCCs units in Norway.
