NCC receives order in Dominican Republic worth SEK 1.9 billion NCC has concluded an agreement regarding a water systems expansion project - Alto Yuna - worth a total of SEK 1.9 billion. The project comprises the construction of a dam, two power stations and tunnels. The contract is conditional upon the implementation of an environmental impact assessment inquiry. The environmental impact inquiry will take a whole year, to ensure that it encompasses conditions during both rain and dry periods. Accordingly, it will take at least one year before construction can commence. The intention is that the project will be financed by Exportfinans of Oslo, based on credit guarantees from the Swedish Export Credit Guarantee Board and the Norwegian Institute for Export Credit Guarantees. "This assignment is fully in line with our strategic focus," says Göran Landgren, President of NCC International. "We have a well-established presence in the Dominican Republic, where we are currently engaged in two water-supply projects worth a total of approximately SEK 1 billion. The current project, Alto Yuna, is highly opportune in terms of both timing and production considerations. "The project has been designed in an environmentally compatible manner and construction of the hydropower facilities will be of major importance to the local agricultural industry. In addition, Alto Yuna is definitely one of the fastest successes that NCC's international operations have noted. Negotiations concerning international projects are normally quite protracted processes, but in this case the work has been both rapid and resolute," relates Göran Landgren. In addition to functioning as a reservoir for power generation, the dam will serve as a reservoir for irrigation and as a control tool for use in the event of flooding. The two power stations will have a combined capacity of 63 MW. A tunnel is to be built to the power stations and thereafter to the river, which will have a side outlet that will safeguard water supply to two cities in the central part of the Dominican Republic.
