NCC is to conduct the energy renovation of Sorgenfrivang II, a municipal housing area outside Copenhagen. The contract, valued at SEK 480 million, is the largest renovation assignment to date for NCC in Denmark and pertains to the first housing area to gain the Green Building Council Denmark’s certification system, DGNB Denmark.

“We have a major focus on sustainability at NCC, and that is why we are delighted about the contract with the housing company, Lyngby Almennyttige Boligselskab, which opens the way for environmental certification in accordance with the Green Building Council Denmark’s certification system, DGNB. The project is a distinct milestone for the sustainability work on energy renovations, both for NCC and for the construction industry in general,” says Dennis Nielsen, head of the Energy Renovation area at NCC Denmark.

The residential buildings in Sorgenfrivang II were built at the end of the 1950s and comprise 429 rental apartments. The buildings will be completely renovated, internally and externally, and as a result of the renovation, the residents of Sorgenfrivang II will have more modern, healthier and energy-efficient apartments.

Energy savings of 66 percent

“The ambitious demands imposed for a DGNB certification mean, for example, that sustainable material with a long lifetime is used. The certification will result in a better indoor climate, make the apartments more inviting and reduce energy use. The energy saving is expected to amount to 66 percent compared with the current levels,” says Karina Mary Andersen, project manager responsible at NCC Construction Denmark.

The renovation assignment will commence in February 2015, when the first tenants move to temporary housing. According to plan, the renovation work will be completed at the end of 2018. The contract has been signed between the housing company, Lyngby Almennyttige Boligselskab, and NCC. The order will be booked during the fourth quarter in NCC Construction Denmark.

DGNB is a system for the certification of sustainable solutions in construction and now also of comprehensive housing renovation work. The certification system makes demands on social, economic, environmental, technical and process-related standards, thereby contributing to ensuring sustainability.
