NCC Construction Sweden has been commissioned by Akademiska Hus to build an auditorium on behalf of the Royal Karolinska Institute in Solna. The seven-story building will have a spectacular leaning shape and will, in addition to a 1,000-seat auditorium, contain a restaurant, café and office premises. The order value for NCC is SEK 270 million.

The building will have a soft, triangular shape with one of its corners leaning sharply over Solnavägen. The façade will be anchored in a glulam frame, which will add to the building’s unique appearance. Large glass surfaces will create transparency and inviting openness. Wingårdhs Arkitekter is the firm that designed the exciting architecture.

“This is a technically advanced and exciting project that will attract considerable attention when it is ready. Since the project will be conducted in the form of a collaboration contract, Akademiska Hus and NCC will be able to jointly devise the optimal solutions – both technically and financially,” says Helena Rönnberg, Business Manager at NCC Construction, Stockholm/Mälardalen region.

With seating for 1,000 people, it will be possible to use the new auditorium for Nobel Prize lectures, seminars and events. The idea is that the Royal Karolinska Institute will also be able to use the premises for lectures linked to research and educational activities conducted by the Institute.

The project will be implemented in the form of a collaboration contract, corresponding to NCC’s partnering model. This entails that all of the parties to the project will cooperate to jointly solve the construction assignment based on honest and transparent cooperation that allows the parties’ various areas of expertise to complement each other through all phases of the construction process.

Construction work will start in February 2011 and the entire building is scheduled for completion in April 2013. The project will be registered among orders in the fourth quarter of 2010.
