The construction of Agnes Kulturhus in central Gävle is now under way. All of the old library and its basement have been demolished. Work is now in progress to pull out the piles from the old building, which will be followed by excavation and piling to lay the new foundations. Piling is expected to continue until the end of October. All preliminary works, such as the floor slab and basement walls, will be in place by early 2023, when work on the frame can begin.

“The partnership is working really well in the project. We share the same view that it should be fun to go to work. We are an effective and flexible team, and help each other out when challenges or unforeseen events arise in the project and are always focused on what’s best for the project,” says Lilianne Axelsson, project manager at Gavlefastigheter.

“With Agnes Kulturhus, we are helping to create a modern meeting place for culture and learning in an iconic place in central Gävle. The planning is now complete and we will construct a building with a contemporary and appealing style of architecture to strengthen the Gävle brand. We are delighted that Gavlefastigheter has given us their trust, and we are looking forward to a long partnership,” says Henrik Landelius, Head of NCC Building Sweden.

A new municipal library will form the basis for the new meeting place in Gävle, which will comprise a library and other cultural activities such as an art gallery, a specialized cinema, podcast studio, VR room, office, creative spaces, event hall and storytelling room. This will be a place where everyone can meet, grow and develop based on their own individual needs.

The building has been designed by Nyréns arkitektkontor and will have a contemporary style with form, color and materials that blend well with the surroundings. The building will be about twice the size of the former municipal library and spread over five floors.

Agnes Kulturhus is scheduled for completion in summer 2024. The transaction was registered in the Building Sweden business area in the second quarter of 2022 and the value of the order is approximately SEK 300 million. The transaction is a turnkey project in partnering form.
