NCC has been commissioned to rebuild four kilometers of existing railway on the northern side of the Umeå River. The project consists of two components: Umeå East and Strömpilen. The customer is Botniabanan and the order is worth approximately SEK 125 million.

The project will entail the rebuilding of the existing railway, which will include new terracing. It also comprises a grade separated crossing between the Strömpilen shopping center and the railway, where retaining walls will also be constructed. The assignment also includes contact lines and work on signal facilities. “The technological challenge lies in the 370 meters of slope reinforcement for the embankment between the railway track and Holmsundsvägen. We will use the soil-reinforcement method, which entails drilling rods into the soil,” says Contract Manager Jan Larsson. Train traffic along the line will be suspended for a total of three weeks during the construction period, which is when the large-scale assignments will be conducted. In between, meticulous planning of labor and machinery will be required. During the weeks when train traffic is suspended, work will be conducted intensively in shifts. The project has commenced and is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2006. Approximately 80 people will be engaged in the project.
