NCC to construct two traffic circles at Täby Centrum shopping mall for SEK 290 million

NCC Construction Sweden has secured an assignment to construct two traffic circles connected by a tunnel at Stora Marknadsvägen by the Täby Centrum shopping mall. The assignment also includes earthworks, including large-scale earth and rock excavation, as well as extensive pipeline rerouting. The customer is the Municipality of Täby and the order is valued at about SEK 290 million.

The project entails challenges in several dimensions, in terms of both structural engineering and logistics. The design of the traffic circles is somewhat extraordinary since they will be constructed on two levels with an interconnecting tunnel.

“The architectural design is spectacular and imposes exacting demands on NCC,” says Thomas Widehag, Contract Manager at NCC Construction Sweden, Stockholm/Mälardalen Region.

Stora Marknadsvägen is a very busy road with Täby Centrum on one side and the Roslagsbanan commuter train on the other, but shopping and traffic must continue as usual during the construction period. Traffic will be redirected to an existing temporary bridge and to existing alternative roads.

“Following an evaluation of financing, expertise, quality and references, NCC Construction Sweden AB has been deemed to be the company that submitted the most advantageous bid for the municipality,” says Rolf Nyberg from the Municipality of Täby’s Infrastructure Department.

Construction is scheduled to commence in mid-April. The traffic circles and the tunnel will be ready during fall 2012 and the complete project is expected to be completed by October 2013. It will employ about 30-35 people. The order will be registered in the first quarter of 2011.
