NCC to expand Växjö University for SEK 150 million NCC has been commissioned by Videum Fastighets AB to construct a new institutional building at Växjö University. The order is worth SEK 150 million and will involve the construction of the largest wooden building in Sweden. This is the first time in modern times that such a large building 150 approximately 10,000 square meters 150 is to be built using wood; that is, using wood as the bearing structure and as the surface material. The building will contain lecture halls and research premises for the Faculty of Industrial Production Systems. The choice of material was natural, since the Faculty will be responsible for providing education in both the forestry and woodworking area and for the major Wood Design and Technology research program. The building will have unique potential to become a stimulating meeting place for researchers, lecturers and students, in which wood plays a prominent role as both a high-quality construction material and from the viewpoint of architectural expression. 147This project is a true challenge to NCC. At the same time, it will enable us to demonstrate our solid competency and expertise in wooden structures,148 says Håkan Stjernqvist, Business Manager at NCC Contracting Sweden. A total of about 20 employees will be involved in the project. Work will commence during April and is scheduled for completion by summer 2002.
