Uppsala is continuing to grow and the municipality’s population is forecast to reach 320,000 by 2050. This population increase is the main reason that Uppsala Vatten needs to upgrade and modernize the Kungsängsverket sewage treatment plant.

“We will now modernize the treatment plant in cooperation with NCC. NCC has extensive experience of water and sewage projects, which was a crucial factor in our procurement of a contractor. Their expert knowledge and the fact that they could offer a proposal that was financially advantageous for Uppsala residents led to our choice of NCC for this assignment,” says Hans Hörting, Project Manager at Uppsala Vatten.

With a scheduled start in September 2021, NCC will construct a new facility for pretreatment that will replace an existing facility, as well as building two new treatment tanks. The two new tanks will be constructed in the same location as the old ones, but slightly closer to each other, and will share a superstructure and technical installation room.

NCC has several similar ongoing projects in this field and the project will be conducted together with experts in the areas of water and environmental technology.

“Sweden’s water and sewage plants are in major need of modernization and the need for investment is extensive. In cooperation with Uppsala Water, we will now future-proof the city’s sewage treatment,” says Kenneth Nilsson, Business Area Manager NCC Infrastructure.

Construction of this project is scheduled to commence in September 2021 and is expected to be completed in September 2024. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 270 million and will be registered in the second quarter of 2021 in the NCC Infrastructure business area.
