This construction project is the largest in the museum’s hundred-year history and will create, for example, more space for expanded museum operations. Since June, the parties have been engaged in planning the project and producing construction documents. The construction contract has now been signed, and the renovation can commence.

NCC’s assignment includes renovating the roof and facades as well as replacing the ventilation. The museum’s inner courtyard will also be enclosed and will feature a glass roof. In total, 12,000 square meters will be renovated. The building was constructed in the early 1900s and has not been renovated since 2000.

“The building is old, and one of Finland’s most famous. Preserving and respecting the building’s architectural value is one of the top priorities in the work on this project, both in the planning phase and during the renovation itself. At the same time, we are going to adapt the building to future needs, re-using where we can and making the building as energy efficient as possible,” says Catarina Molén-Runnäs, Head of NCC Building Nordics.

Construction will begin immediately and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The assignment, worth about SEK 320 million, will be registered among orders during the fourth quarter of 2023 in the NCC Building Nordics business area.
