Neste Corporation, Press Release, 13 September 2018 at 12:15 pm (EET)

Neste has been selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the 12th consecutive year. The company was included in the DJSI World and DJSI Europe, once again, among the most sustainable companies in the world. Neste’s performance improved from the year before, with the industry’s best scores in climate strategy, environmental reporting, and water-related risks contributing to the company’s inclusion among the top  performers.

“In 2017, we focused particularly on maximizing our positive handprint on climate emissions. Our renewable products helped reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by a record-high 8.3 million tons, equaling the annual emissions of some 3 million passenger cars, the combined total of cars in Berlin and London,“ explains Neste’s Simo Honkanen, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Public Affairs.

“This significant positive handprint was made possible by continuing to focus on circular economy. We produce our renewables primarily from waste and residue fats and oils. In 2017, waste and residues accounted for 76% of our renewable raw material usage. This year we have started exploring ways to introduce plastics waste as raw material in fossil oil refining and petrochemical industries,“ Honkanen adds.

Based on the DJSI analysis, Neste still has room for improvement in the area of operational eco-efficiency. The combined heat and power plant already being constructed at our main site in Porvoo, Finland will help improve the performance.

Companies are selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices based on a comprehensive assessment of long-term performance indicators measured by economic, environmental, and social criteria, as well as against sustainability trends. The assessment of companies this year is based on their performance in 2017. Only leading companies in each industry are included in the indices each year.
