49th Annual Lecture to Cover Interbranch Tangling: Separating Our Constitutional Powers

What: The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) presents the 49th Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Lecture given by the Hon. Judith S. Kaye, of Counsel, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Former Chief Judge, State of New York. Judge Kaye will lecture on Interbranch Tangling: Separating Our Constitutional Powers, at the event sponsored by Hughes Hubbard, centering on the separate powers of the three independent branches of the United States government as they come up against one another.

The Hughes Lecture Series, in its 49th year, was instituted by NYCLA in 1948 to pay tribute to the Hon. Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948). Hughes served as NYCLA’s eighth president (1919-1921), was Governor of New York (1907-1910), Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1910-1916), U.S. Secretary of State (1921-1925) and Chief Justice of the United States (1930-1941). In 1916, he resigned from the Supreme Court to run as the Republican U.S. presidential candidate, losing one of the closest presidential elections in history to Woodrow Wilson. The historic clashes during Chief Justice Hughes's tenure provide a timely backdrop for the lecture.
