23 October 2015 – Heathrow opened its doors to a group of 35 representatives of the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES), who received an in-depth briefing on the technical challenges that regularly confront Europe’s business airport.

Included in the programme were presentations by Heathrow’s Mark Tomkins on minimising the airport’s impact on the surrounding environment through initiatives such as the T2 biomass energy centre, and by Simon Hughes of Mann+Hummel Vokes Air on the new air filtration arrangements and the installation of a single Revo pocket filter system.

Further contributions came from Mike Hutt of H+E (UK) on Heathrow’s Snowbase waste water treatment plant, and from Michael Deans of Freemantle Electrical, who provided an insight into the airport’s electrical vehicle charging initiative.

The visit culminated in a guided tour of a 10MW biomass combined heat and power plant, one of the largest installations of its kind in the UK.

“We had an excellent event,” commented B&ES chief executive Paul McLaughlin.  “Our members were unanimous in their praise for the many impressive initiatives being taken forward, and by the willingness of our Heathrow hosts to share their expertise, their knowledge and their achievements.”
