NKT delivers world-first reusable 400 kV temporary cable solution for Amprion’s grid upgrade
A new high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable solution allows transmission system operators to maintain power flow during grid reconfigurations and upgrades. It also introduces a more resource-efficient alternative to conventional, temporary cable systems.
NKT has successfully deployed a world-first 400 kV HVAC temporary cable solution for German transmission system operator Amprion as part of ongoing grid upgrade works. The project marks the first time that an extra high-voltage temporary cable is applied in a reusable configuration in transmission grid operations, combining uninterrupted power flows during construction phases with reduced material waste through reuse.
First-ever reusable 400 kV temporary cable solution
The modular and pluggable temporary cable system is designed to remain in operation for shorter timeframes. When decommissioning or reconfiguring existing high-voltage substations, the temporary cable serves as an intermediate solution until the new system is operational. Unlike conventional temporary solutions, which are typically dismantled and disposed of after use, the temporary cable system from NKT can be disconnected, stored and redeployed in future projects. This approach significantly reduces material waste, conserves resources and lowers overall project costs.
- With the deployment of the 400 kV temporary cable solution, we are taking a pioneering step in transmission grid reconstruction. The ability to reuse extra-high-voltage temporary cables represents a significant advancement in how we manage resources, costs and project execution. Together with our partners, we are setting a new benchmark for sustainable and efficient grid development, says Klaus Wewering, Senior Vice President DC Grid Projects from Amprion.
Developed in close collaboration with leading TSOs
The development of the cable solution is based on a specification jointly established by a group of German TSOs. NKT collaborated closely with Amprion to translate these requirements into a fully qualified cable system and to implement the pilot project, establishing a scalable framework for future applications.
- Delivering the world’s first reusable 400 kV temporary cable system demonstrates how customer-focused innovation can directly support the energy transition while improving sustainability and efficiency in grid infrastructure projects. At this voltage level it introduces a new standardised approach with reduced resource consumption and at the same time more flexibility for our customers, says Raphael Görner, Executive Vice President and Head of Grid Solutions at NKT.
Enabling scalable and standardised solutions
The introduction of a uniform specification for reusable temporary cables enables scalability, interoperability and improved efficiency across projects and operators. The successful implementation in Amprion’s project paves the way for wider adoption of reusable extra-high-voltage temporary cable systems, supporting the accelerated expansion and modernisation of power grids needed to integrate renewable energy sources across Europe.
