NKT signs new multi-year framework agreements with EnBW to support Germany’s energy transition

NKT has secured two framework agreements with EnBW, one of Germany’s largest distribution system operators (DSOs), for the delivery of low- and medium-voltage power cables. The agreements mark a continuation of a long-standing collaboration and reaffirm NKT’s central role in supporting the development of Germany’s electricity grid as the country accelerates its transition to renewable energy.

The new agreements cover a fixed period of three years, with an option to extend for an additional two years. Under the framework agreements, NKT has firm commitments to supply a broad portfolio of power cables to support grid expansion, reinforce distribution networks, and enable the connection of renewable energy assets across southern Germany. The framework agreements cover significant volumes of medium-voltage (10-30 kV) and low-voltage (1 kV) power cables, which will be delivered from NKT’s sites in Kladno and Velke Meziříčí, both located in the Czech Republic.

– Germany’s energy transition is progressing at pace, and we are proud to continue our partnership with EnBW in delivering the power cables necessary. With more than 25 years of collaboration, we share a strong commitment to building a reliable and sustainable electricity grid for the future, says Carlos Fernandez, Executive Vice President, Head of Applications, NKT.

Headquartered in Karlsruhe, in southern Germany, EnBW supplies more than 5.5 million customers. The company aims to achieve 75–80% renewable electricity generation by 2030 and full climate neutrality by 2035. To meet these goals, EnBW plans to invest EUR 40 billion by the end of this decade, mainly focused on upgrading and expanding the power grid.

The new framework agreements further strengthen NKT’s position in the German utility market, which is expected to grow steadily over the coming years as the power grid evolves to accommodate higher volumes of renewable electricity.

– Germany's energy transition is no longer just about adding more renewables. It is about reengineering the grid to handle the complexity of two-way power flows from decentralised sources like solar, wind, and battery storage. This partnership with EnBW reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the grid as a backbone of energy independence and resilience. A modern, flexible network is essential not only for meeting national climate goals, but also for reinforcing Germany’s role as a critical hub in the wider European energy system, adds Carlos Fernandez.
