Operakällaren raises 4.2 million SEK for UNICEF
The Operakällaren Trophy charity golf tournament was held yesterday for the eight consecutive year. This year the event raised 4.2 million SEK for UNICEF’s water project in Somalia. After the tournament there was an auction and workshops, with speakers that included Hans Rosling, Jason ‘Timbuktu’ Diakité and Ashok Khosla. To date, the Operakällaren Trophy has raised 17 million SEK for UNICEF’s projects in East Africa.
The Operakällaren Trophy fundraiser, in support of UNICEF, was attended by the general public as well as prominent names from the financial, sports and entertainment industries.
“It’s an amazing feeling, being able to contribute to UNICEF, as well as having set a new donation record this year. It is a unique opportunity, and an obligation, to contribute to an important cause. We can all do something to help,” says Abbe Ibrahim, President of Operakällaren and founder of the Operakällaren Trophy.
All of the money raised will go to UNICEF’s projects in Somalia, where less than a third of the population has access to clean water. And even where water is available, the quality is often poor due to the water systems, wells and springs being old and neglected.
The sanitary situation is particularly acute in the cities and large villages, where people live close together. Toilets are often located close to water sources and there is usually a lack of waste disposal. The poor hygienic conditions are the main reason that diseases such as cholera are raging in these areas. UNICEF’s projects, which include drilling wells and building toilets, can save thousands of lives.
“We need initiators and driving forces like Abbe Ibrahim, who raise money for children in need and at the same time help to raise awareness about the situation in East Africa. We hope that this will inspire others to initiate similar activities,” says Véronique Lönnerblad, Secretary General of UNICEF Sweden.
