Helix wins Drinks Business Green Award

Helix, the revolutionary cork and glass bottle system with an unexpected twist, has won its unprecedented seventh international award – this time in the UK.

This week it has been announced that Helix, the result of four year’s R&D between Amorim & irmaos and O-I, has won the top product title – Best Green Launch -  at the 2015 Drinks Business Green Awards in London, the only industry awards in the world that recognise and encourage environmental responsibility and sustainability..

Making the presentation at London’s famous Ivy Restaurant, Patrick Schmitt, editor in chief of Drinks Business said that Helix had won through a closely fought contest because of its ‘wow’ factor.

'Helix's appeal lies in its convenience and ease of opening, while also flagging up  all the sustainability credentials of natural cork' he explained. ‘As this striking piece of innovation picks up commercial momentum, the judges were keen to reward this exciting, appealing addition to the closures scene.’

But this is not the first award that Helix has won during its development period. Following its successful launch to the world’s wine industry at Vinexpo on 2013, and the subsequent test and trial period, accolades for what has been billed as the most exciting closure concept of the century have been received from the ‘Packaging Oscars’ of both France and Italy, as well as key awards for design and innovation.

‘Our unique Helix system is a real game changer, and it is good to see it recognised by our peers in the international wine world’, comments Carlos de Jesus. Marketing Director of Amorim.’  ‘We are particularly excited to receive the Award for the Best Green Launch in this year’s Drinks Business Green Awards as we know how stiff the competition always is.  And we are delighted that the product’s ‘green’ credentials have been understood and acknowledged in this way.’

Commenting on the show stopping success of Helix, since its launch two years ago,  Benoit Villaret, wine segment leader at O-I Europe said, ‘With this seventh award, Helix has demonstrated it is a commercial and environmental success as well as a great concept. Even at the awards ceremony, we started fresh conversations with people who were keen to investigate the potential of Helix for their brands.’

Helix-closed bottles are now out in the marketplace, and selling well in major European and US retailers as consumers discover this environmentally-friendly closure with its easy opening.  Producers in France, Spain, Italy, Austria and Portugal are already using the system for a wide range of wines, and both companies receive more orders every month.
