Luxurious embossed glass bottle by O-I communicates distinctive character and premium quality of Sicily’s “volcanic” wines

Since 1898, Cantine Nicosia has been committed to cultivating its rare native vines on the slopes of Sicily’s Etna volcano. One of these is the Nerello Mascalese vine – the origin of the company’s “volcanic” Etna Rosso wine, which has been awarded with a DOC certification.

To package this vibrant and individual wine – and the equally excellent Etna Bianco – a new bottle has been developed that preserves the special characteristics of the wines and communicates the heritage of Cantine Nicosia to local and international markets.

Building on their enduring partnership, the Nicosia family and O-I – the world’s largest glass packaging manufacturer – have collaborated closely to define the brief for the design of the new 75cl bottle. The bottle is characterized by prominent, curvaceous shoulders and the distinctive base, which forms a pedestal on which the embossed name “Nicosia” stands out. The impressive bottle conveys the premium positioning of Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco wines and underlines the Nicosia family’s commitment to producing and promoting wines from the Etna region.

Carmelo Nicosia, owner of Cantine Nicosia, explains: “We wanted to develop a luxurious new package for our most premium products because we believe that Sicilian wines deserve to wear a ‘dress’ worthy of their great local and international reputation. None of this would have been possible without our close and long collaboration with O-I, the worldwide leader in glass packaging. The outcome is this wonderful bottle with its simple but elegant lines. We believe it will make Nicosia’s wines even more recognizable and appealing, showing consumers the great care and passion that goes into each of our products.”

The bottle is decorated with elegant labels: a small label on the front highlights the Nicosia brand and the year it was founded, while the label beneath displays the name of the wine. The drawing of the volcano, with its characteristic plume of smoke, evokes the region where the vineyards are cultivated, and the gold silhouette of Sicily is a subtle reminder of the country of origin.

Commenting on the role of the new packaging, general manager Carmelo Marletta says: “For us, as always, packaging is a fundamental element because it differentiates our products from the vast range of brands – from all over the world – which are found on retail and cellar shelves today. Consumers of quality wines place great importance on aesthetics and we try to meet their needs by offering a product of the highest quality, satisfying both their taste-buds and their eyes. The new Nicosia bottle is a further step in this direction, so we are very thankful to O-I.”

The decision to develop the customized glass bottle is part of an overall philosophy for this ancient wine producer, and demonstrates its great commitment and passion for the Etna region and its vineyards. Consistent with this, the glass bottles are manufactured at O-I’s Marsala plant, close to where the wines are produced.

The natural quality of glass and its unique ability to preserve aroma and taste fit perfectly with the Nicosia family’s mission to safeguard the ancient Etna vineyard. Not only has the vineyard been restored after years of complete neglect, but in addition, the local landscape has been returned to its former glory, with traditional terracing and small buttress walls made of basaltic stones. Most importantly, the rare native vines of Etna (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, Catarratto) have again started to produce the intensely scented grapes for Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco wines.
