The globally leading airlaid nonwoven producer Glatfelter is now, after years of development, launching, a 100 % biobased and home-compostable airlaid material at the trade fair INDEX23 in Geneva. By utilizing OrganoClick’s biobased and home-compostable binder, the OC-Biobinder, traditional fossil-based binders in the material have been replaced. The commercialization will start Q2 2023.

Glatfelter and OrganoClick have collaborated for nearly five years in the development of the new airlaid material. OrganoClick’s biobased and home-compostable binder, which replaces the fossil-based binder in the traditional material, is made of raw materials from side streams in the food industry originating from wheat, corn, lemons and shrimp shells. The new airlaid material can be used for tabletop products but also for several other applications.

“As a proud manufacturer of high-quality nonwoven materials, we are excited to showcase our innovative and sustainable speciality solutions designed to enhance consumers’ everyday life,” said Thomas Fahnemann, President and Chief Executive Officer of Glatfelter. “During this year’s event we look forward to connecting with our industry partners to share our ongoing commitment to sustainability and to grow awareness around Glatfelter’s full line of nonwoven products.”

Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, Glatfelter’s annual net sales approximate USD 1.5 billion with approximately 3,250 employees worldwide and a total production of 340,000 tons of nonwovens in 2022 of which approximately 160,000 tons is airlaid nonwoven. Glatfelter’s operations utilize a variety of manufacturing technologies including airlaid, wetlaid and spunlace with sixteen manufacturing sites located in the United States, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the Philippines. The Company’s nonwovens can be found in products such as personal care and hygiene products, food and beverage filtration, critical cleaning products, medical and personal protection, packaging products, as well as home improvement and industrial applications.

“We are very happy that Glatfelter is launching this biobased and home-compostable airlaid nonwoven material at the INDEX23 fair.
