Minister for the Environment; Åsa Romson wants to see tougher measures against environmental toxins.
Discussion on hazardous chemicals has long been a hot topic in the media and in the political debates. But who really takes action? Are there options to choose from?
The Swedish government is now establishing a ‘Centre for Chemical Substitution’ to power producers and consumers to discard harmful chemicals and instead use environmentally friendly alternatives. This is no longer a utopia, but there are plenty of eco-friendly options on the market already, which provides at least as good functionality and is also cost effective. So there are no longer any excuses for the industries not to choose environmentally friendly alternatives!
The Swedish Minister for the Environment Åsa Romson today visited OrganoClick in Stockholm, Täby to advertise the government's new venture. OrganoClick scientists have conducted research in the area of chemical substitution since the mid-90s. They have observed nature's own mechanisms and tried to mimic desired features such as water repellence, rot protection, flame resistance, strength, etc. using natural substances that can be applied in industry.
"We are here at OrganoClick today because I want a show an alternative that already exists when it comes to removing hazardous chemicals from commercial products in the industry. As an example, pressure-treated wood, that people use in their gardens or water -repellent clothing. This feel especially important now when spring arrives and people want to spend time outdoors, then you really want to feel that you are wearing good materials. Where do we encounter these hazardous chemicals? PFAS like fluorocarbons are some of the dangerous chemicals frequently discussed in the media and that we want to avoid. These exist in for example impregnation of clothing and textiles, detergents, waxes, etc. They are also used in surface treatment of food packaging and the manufacturing of pots and pans. PFAS has in animal studies been shown to have effects on the reproductive, immune and endocrine systems. The evidence suggests that humans are affected in the same way.
"There are often environmentally friendly alternatives to a lot of toxic chemicals but they do not live up to the same functional standards. We want to offer environmentally friendly chemical products and materials that are as good, or better, function as the toxic chemicals. Products must also be manufactured cost-effectively so that they can be sold at a price that makes sense to make an impact with consumers." Mårten Hellberg CEO at OrganoClick.
