Orrefors IPA joins the BEER family.
The incredibly popular Beer range of beer glasses, specially designed for Pilsner, Lager and Taster will be extended this year with a unique glass for IPA. The glasses in this range have been designed to bring out the prominent aromas and taste sensations from each type of beer, and now we pay tribute to India Pale Ale with the Orrefors IPA.
“IPA is essentially an ale, a top-fermented beer, so it should theoretically be ideal for a tall, straight ale glass, but that’s not the case. The high content of hops and malt produces a lot of aroma and taste, and usually a higher alcohol content, which means that undesired residual aromas of sulphur that are otherwise in an ale are not noticed. So an IPA glass should definitely have a form that doesn’t hide anything, but emphasises aroma and taste by narrowing at the top.”

Erika Lagerbielke is the designer of the international award-winning Difference range of wine glasses worthy of the world’s premier restaurant, Noma in Copenhagen. She is also the creator of the design classic Intermezzo with its significant drop, and most recently now the Beer range of glasses, which have been extremely successful among the world’s beer connoisseurs.
“IPA is also special in another way. It’s a beer with plenty of attitude, and many breweries profile themselves as rebels who are going there own way. There are lots of skulls, graffiti and the like on the labels. In my world Orrefors couldn’t really be credible as a rebel or a punk, but we can be genuine. It was also a matter of finding an expression that wasn’t already covered by the other glasses in the Beer range, and we didn’t want to produce a wine glass for beer. So I created a glass in the form of a short, tulip-shaped tumbler, to bring out the rich maltiness and aromatic hop aromas, as well as freshness, which continues down in a straight form that constitutes the base of the glass.”
