Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, UK – On the 12th of September, 2010, The National Brewery Centre will be hosting a Heavy Horse Show competition in celebration of iconic heavy horse breeds from around the region, which will include the Centre’s very own pair of Shires, Trooper and Major. The event will be judged by one of the country’s top horse breeders Tom Fountain, who, over the past 50 years, has won countless awards and accolades in show and breeding competitions. There will be six horse entry classes, ranging from yearlings to young handlers between 10 and 16 years old. The best of each class and runners-up will receive cash prizes. This will be a great event for heavy horse enthusiasts as well as a brilliant day out for all the family to enjoy; offering kids the chance to see just how huge these horses are in real life. It will be the very first horse show held at the Centre and all efforts will be put into ensuring its success, with plans to make it an annual event. Heavy horses are extremely large, suitable for drawing heavy loads, often referred to as draught or dray horses. They are renowned for their strength, endurance and good disposition; including breeds such as Shire, Clydesdale, Suffolk and Percheron. Heavy horse owners from around the region will be attending, and with over 50 horses expected to compete, the event offers a great opportunity for visitors to get up close to the magnificent creatures. The head horseman at The National Brewery Centre, Andrew Whetton, comes from a long-line of Shire breeders and upon leaving school worked with horses at a Blackburn-based brewery, looking after them, delivering beer and successfully entering Shire horse shows throughout the UK. He said “Horses are in my blood and a large part of my life has been dedicated to working with them. I’m really happy to be showing visitors just how great these horses are. Everyone at the Centre is very proud to be hosting this fantastic celebration of Heavy Horse breeds and it gives me great pleasure to be a part of it.” It is expected that the event will draw in a large number of visitors and The National Brewery Centre is recommending that anyone wishing to dine at the Brewery Tap bar and restaurant book well in advance. Doors open to the public from 10am and the first class show will begin at 11am. Further details can be found at the website http://www.nationalbrewerycentre.co.uk ENDS
