Paulig begins construction of new sustainable tortilla production plant in Belgium
Paulig has recently started constructing a new tortilla plant in Roeselare, Belgium. With this 45-million EUR investment in a new production facility, Paulig aims to strengthen its position as market leader of Tex Mex in Europe. Paulig aims to make the new plant carbon neutral from the start in line with the company’s ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 80% by 2030 from a 2018 baseline. Production of Santa Maria and Poco Loco tortillas in the new factory is expected to start in the spring of 2022.
“Paulig aims to be one of Europe’s fastest growing companies in the food & beverage industry and a sustainable frontrunner. This new factory in Belgium will allow us to drive the further growth of the Tex Mex category and increase our innovation capabilities. We believe that business growth and sustainability can go hand in hand and therefore, our aim is to make the new plant carbon neutral from the start. We want to create a new, sustainable food culture that is good for both people and planet”, says Rolf Ladau, CEO of Paulig.
Ambition to make the new factory carbon neutral from the start
Paulig has set itself the ambitious goal of being a sustainable frontrunner in the food & beverage industry. “In this new factory, we can integrate the best practices from our existing plants to maximize energy efficiency and minimize the climate impacts. The location of the factory also allows to optimize the logistics flows and reduce transportation needed. The production facility will be connected with a bridge to the adjacent distribution center, thus eliminating the on-road transportation need for warehousing purposes”, says Thomas Panteli, SVP Supply Chain and Sourcing at Paulig.
Paulig is planning to make all ten of its existing factories in six countries carbon neutral by 2023. In Finland, the Paulig coffee roastery in Vuosaari and Gold&Green Foods factory in Järvenpää have already achieved the CarbonNeutral® building certification, just like the Molndal and Landskrona factories in Sweden which produce Santa Maria spices and tortilla bread and Risenta muesli. Paulig plans to make the new Belgian production plant carbon neutral from the start as the work to make the other existing factories carbon neutral continues.
