Lundin moving hundreds of TB to Proact
11. December 2012: Proact take over the storage for Lundin. This ensures that the oil company meet all their data storage needs of today and in the future. Eirik Pedersen, Managing Director of Proact Norway: “This is our largest hybrid cloud deal ever”.
Oil and gas company Lundin has played an important role on the Norwegian shelf in recent years, operating the Brynhild and Edvard Grieg fields. In addition, Lundin is crucial to the further development of the Johan Sverdrup discovery, the largest oil discovery on the Norwegian continental shelf since the mid-1980s. A comprehensive demarcation program is implemented during 2012/2013 to determine the discovery’s size. Beyond this, the company has more than 50 licenses on the Norwegian continental shelf. A total of 320 employees are working in and for the company. Lundin is prepared for a significant growth in the coming years. The petroleum industry requires the best IT tools. Lundin produces and store huge amounts of information, particularly seismic and geological data.
“Last year's data volumes of 90 TB have doubled this year. In 2013, this will likely increase to 320 TB, and the corresponding development in the year to come. Today’s NetApp solution is running out of capacity. We therefore sought new approaches with a tender where Proact drew the longest straw”, says Martin Leslie, head of IT at Lundin Norway. “Proact have proven ability to serve as a strategic advisor and can point to a number of references to small and large customers, nationally and internationally”, says Leslie.
To ensure the best storage Proact will now take over responsibility for all company data by a model where the equipment will be placed in the customer's environment and mirrored to a redundant location. Proact has overall responsibility for both the primary and the secondary location, while the customer has full access to the equipment when necessary and if required. Thus Lundin is ensured that they have enough capacity to handle the current amount of data in the best way, and they can easily scale up to all future growth. After a thorough investigation it was determined that the solution should remain on a NetApp platform.
“As a player in significant growth we need to ally ourselves with the best partners. Proact is the biggest and best NetApp partner, and they had a flexible approach that met our needs today and in the future. They have the expertise we need and has proven this over the last twelve months”, says Leslie.
“This agreement was the best pre-Christmas gift we could get. It's my colleagues’ knowledgeable and reliable delivery that allows customers to put greater trust in us. The contract is an acknowledgment of good deliveries and we shall show us trust worthy in the future”, says Pedersen.
“More and more customers give us the confidence to manage their data sets. This allows them to focus on their business while we securely handle the underlying processes. Many formerly reserved to outsource data storage do not experience this as a problem anymore, especially while it revolves around a local provider”, says Pedersen.
