New backup solution leaves more in the pot for SmåA

Archive and storage specialists Proact have swapped the backups of Småföretagarnas Arbetslöshetskassa, the Unemployment Benefit Fund for Small Business Owners or SmåA, creating a new solution in which storage and backup are integrated. This has resulted in greater flexibility and considerably reduced operating costs.

SmåA is Sweden’s biggest unemployment benefit fund for small business owners. When the organisation moved to new premises, they decided to work in consultation with storage integrator Proact to invest in a new, snapshot-based backup service instead of taking their existing system with them. The new solution integrates backup and storage, which means that part of the infrastructure can be eliminated and traditional backup software is surplus to requirements.

Cutting back the IT infrastructure has also made it more cost effective, and this new solution will allow SmåA to halve its costs. This is mainly due to the fact that the costs can be paid off straight away, and there is no need for SmåA to pay ongoing licensing fees. All in all, this measure has considerably reduced the organisation’s operating costs.

“The solution worked well right from the outset and we have not had any unplanned downtime. The biggest change is the security of knowing that our system is working without any manual intervention. This system is also considerably simpler to operate as we do not have to use backup agents now that our backups are integrated in the storage environment. Of course, no longer having to work with the old solution, which involved spending a lot of time swapping and dealing with tapes, has made our lives easier as well,” Hans Öström, Head of IT at Småföretagarnas Arbetslöshetskassa.

Hans Öström also explains that the method used for restoring data is also considerably easier and more intuitive in the new solution. The switchover was also facilitated thanks to the fact that the organisation was given the opportunity to visit the Proact lab for a thorough review of the solution, how it works and how to use it.
