Proact modernises Wallenstam's storage solution

Archiving and storage specialist Proact has delivered a new storage and backup solution to property company Wallenstam. Although Wallenstam was initially looking to procure a new SAN, it ended up abandoning its traditional backup solution in favour of a more cost-efficient one that was better suited to the company's needs.

In the last five years Wallenstam's data storage has grown by 400 percent. Last autumn when it was planning the procurement of a new storage solution, the company was also encumbered by inefficient and cost-intensive processes for handling data.

"The only thing we know for sure is that volumes of data keep growing and we need a system that can handle it. The proposed solution clearly showed us the depth of Proact’s cutting-edge storage and backup expertise. Proact was the only supplier that analysed our needs from the bigger perspective and had the foresight to think outside the box. The solution they proposed to us was flexible enough to fulfil our needs, both present and future," says Daniel Svartling, IT Manager at Wallenstam.

Proact proposed that Wallenstam should consolidate its storage solution by switching from traditional backups to snapshot backups sent to Proact’s premises. It is a faster backup method that requires less administration and, as the solution can be run without traditional backup software, it is more cost-efficient in the long run.

In Wallenstam's previous solution, backup, server and storage were all separate and disaster recovery was handled manually by moving tapes from one location to another. With the new solution, backups are taken electronically and are transferred to Proact's operations centre. This means Wallenstam's disaster recovery is also assured. And while the primary storage will continue to be handled locally by Wallenstam, a more efficient compression reduces the required storage space by 50 percent.

"With the new solution Wallenstam gets a modern, future-proof and efficient infrastructure that saves time and, in the long run, also money. A growing number of our customers are letting us take care of their secondary storage, leaving them free to concentrate on other parts of their IT environment," says Martin Ödman, Regional Manager at Proact.

The agreement was signed in the spring and the solution has been implemented and is now in operation. The value of the deal is SEK 1.1 million. The cost of operating the solution is additional.
