Proact selected for network upgrade by public administration in southern Sweden

IT 4K – an IT operations partnership serving local governments in southern Sweden – has selected Proact as its supplier for a major initiative to update IT infrastructure and streamline operations. The investment plan includes wireless LANs using the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard.

Proact has been selected as networking supplier by IT 4K, a co-op partnership formed by local governments in southern Sweden which includes the municipalities of Bjuv, Klippan, Perstorp, Åstorp and Örkelljunga, with a combined population of 67,000. Through public procurement, the municipalities are investing in joint infrastructure to raise network capacity between local government entities while improving user experiences when accessing digital tools and services.

Over the three-year contract period, IT 4K is planning for a stepwise technology update where the new networking solution will be implemented, designed and supported by Proact and using Huawei equipment.

The purpose of the investment is to build for the future and meet projected needs for increased networking capacity, with the greatest demand coming from schools. Public schools covered by the IT 4K partnership, with a total of 13,500 pupils, increasingly rely on cloud-based platforms. Viewing of high-definition video is also growing rapidly, adding to the load on city networks and Internet links – a trend which seemingly will continue.

”The benefits with our IT 4K partnership come both from coordinated purchasing and from jointly-managed operations. We now get a highly scalable solution, while also building a more cohesive infrastructure which helps us reduce costs for operations and maintenance,” says Johan Thümmel, IT Manager at IT 4K.

The existing network infrastructure comprises a large amount of switches and wireless access points, with equipment from multiple brands. New wireless networks will now be deployed using Huawei AirEngine products supporting the Wi-Fi 6 standard, which provide up to a fourfold increase in throughput when compared with Wi-Fi 5, while also being more energy efficient. The performance gains are particularly notable under heavy network load, resulting in faster response times and enhanced user experience.

The core network connecting various public entities and offices will also be upgraded, when Proact implements the Huawei Cloud Engine S Series switches and management tools. The new network environment enables IT 4K to consolidate its existing IT infrastructure and centralise operations using fewer data centres.

“For Proact, it’s a great opportunity to support IT4K and their initiative to build a modern and future-proof infrastructure. This partnership is a great role model for how local governments can digitalise services on their own terms, and capture the advantages offered by new technology,” said Lena Eskilsson, Managing Director, Proact IT Sweden AB.
